  • 8 Jun 2010 — Magna Carter weekend

This weekend sees a celebration of the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Magna Carter. The events are organised by St Albans City & District Council, as part of the St Albans Festival. The festival itself runs from 11 June until 27 June, with the Magna Carter theme forming the opening weekend, to coincide with the date of its seal on 15 June 1215. The festival as a whole includes a varied range of indoor and outdoor events at a number of venues in and around St Albans.

Although the festival falls outside the area covered by North Watford History Group, it does include events of general historical interest, and remains fairly local. St Albans can be reached from North Watford by bus (321 or 724) or train (using the Abbey Flier service).

  • 8 Jun 2010 — Rosamind Julius

We have recently learned of the passing of Rosamind Julius. She was the daughter of Ray Hille, and played an important part in the success of Hille furniture company. It had been Rosamind and her husband, Leslie, who hired the designer Robin Day, which ultimately led to the company's succesful product ranges of stacking chairs.

BBC Radio 4 broadcast an obituary at part of its Last Word programme on 28 May. The BBC iPlayer service allows this programme to be heard again, if it had been missed on its original broadcasts. Last Word on BBC iPlayer
